Arc de Triomphe is one of the most popular and famous monument situated
in Paris. It is at the center of Place Charles de Gaulle at the western
end. There is also one similar Arc de Triumph du Carrousel which is to
the west of Louvre. This Triumphal Arch was made to honor the sacrifices
mades by people who died in French Revolutionary. It has written over
it all the names of the French Generals who dedicated their lives in the
Napoleonic Wars. There is one tomb of a soldier from World War I which
was founded underneath the vault. The identity of the soldier is still
not found.
In 1806, Jean Chalgrin designed the monument. It had a patriotic message
carved with it. The monument is 164 feet in height, 148 feet in width
and 72 feet in depth. It was the largest triumphal arch that was built
until the new triumph in Pyongyang was built.
The arc can be found at the right bank of the river Seine. There are
often parades of French troops on the day of annual Bastille Day Military
Parade. There may be parade under the arc or around it. Germans marched
in 1871; French in 1919, Germans in 1940 while the French in 1944.
