The Art Institute of Chicago was founded in 1879 as the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts. In 1882, the name was changed to the Art Institute of Chicago. It first stood on the southwest corner of State and Monroe Streets as both a museum and school. The Art Institute officially opened on December 8, 1893.
