Biography: A passionate Badminton player, she grew up in Chandigarh, Punjab. Her debut Punjabi film Aasra Pyar Da released in 1983 was well admired. She took a long gap of about fifteen years to bring up her son, Sikander Kher succeeding her divorce from Gautam Berry. She later married veteran actor, Anupam Kher. In the interim, she worked as Costume Designer for Parampara (1992), Gumrah (1993), Prem Granth (1996) and acted next to Anupam Kher in Pestonjee (1988).
Her homecoming to acting was dramatist Javed Siddiqui’s play ‘Saalgirah’. Kher also hosted three television programs; Kiron Kher Today, Jaagte Raho with Kiron Kher and the highly praised Purushkshetra which aired on Zee TV, with open deliberations on sexuality for the first time. She reappeared in Bollywood with Shyam Benegal’s Sardari Begum winning the 1997 National Film Award (Special Jury Award). Kher‘s portrayal of Banalata, won her the National Film Award (Best Actress) for Rituparno Ghosh’s  Bengali film Bariwali. Kher acted in the 2002 lavish multi starrer Devdas along with Shah Rukh Khan, Aishwarya Rai and Madhuri Dixit. But the milestone of her career was the 2003 movie, Khamosh Pani (Silent Waters), fetching her awards and recognitions in Locarno Internaional Film Festival, Switzerland (Bronze Leopard), Karachi International Festival and International Film Festivals in Argentina (Ciepe) and in South Africa (Cape Town). She plays the role of Ayesha Khan, a troubled woman, kidnapped and caught in the crisis of division of India and trying hard to make ends meet. Kher’s appearance in movies like, Main Hoon Na (2004), Veer Zaara (2004), Hum Tum (2004),  Mangal Pandey: The Rising (2005) but her act in the 2006 blockbuster, Rang De Basanti won her another Flimfare nomination for Best Supporting Actress. She continued her work with Fanaa (2006), Khabhi Alvida Naa Kehna (2006) and was seen later in comic roles in movies like Singh is Kinng, Dostana, Saas Bahu Aur Sensex, Om Shanti Om, Action Replay and many others.
She also appeared as the mother of Parminder Nagra in the ER television series in 2004. Kher took to judging contestants in the 2009 India’s Got Talent.
Ajab Gazabb Love and Dostana 2 are her current films under production.
